Museum Of The Crypte

The largest crypt in France, the Crypt of the Notre-Dame de Boulogne-Sur-Mer Basilica opened its doors to the general public in May 2015. Here, more than 2000 years of history are watching you. A visioguide accompanies visitors to the crypt, which is reputed to be the largest in France.

It was during the construction of a new church in the late nineteenth century that this Romanesque crypt was found by chance. The crypt has 12 rooms with 4000 m2 of painted wall surface and some 473 intriguing objects. One finds there:

  • The reliquary of the Holy Blood (14th century) and several treasures of sacred art.
  • Gothic and Romanesque lapidales collections.
  • The statue of Christ in ivory (seventeenth century) and other statues.

In 2013, a major renovation program was launched. He intended to restore all the murals and other archaeological remains. Therefore, the remains of the old medieval church, the nave, the road or the remains of the old Roman barracks have been updated. It is to better present this new place that the city of Boulogne-sur-Mer offers an access guide for smartphones and tablets.

The application can be downloaded for free from Google Play stores and Apple Store. It is also available in ready tablets at the entrance of the crypt.
